How to Set Up 2-Factor Authentication with Duo Mobile

Make sure that you are off the campus network when setting up 2FA for the first time or the BYUI network will automatically log you in. 

If you are a student at BYU-Idaho, you will be required to enroll in 2-factor authentication (2FA). For more about 2FA, please watch our Introduction: Why 2FA? video. 

These instructions are only for setting up 2FA using push notifications. If your do not have a smartphone, please visit that article Setting Up 2-Factor Authentication Without the Duo Mobile App to find out how to sign up without an app. Please be aware that while phone calls and text messages cost the school money, push notifications are free. If you have a smartphone, we ask that you use push notifications.


1. Log in to your BYU-Idaho account. 

2. Click Start setup

2-FA through Duo Mobile may not be available to every student until June 2020. If you are not seeing this window when you log in, you may not yet be enrolled. See our article Student 2FA FAQs to learn more about the ScreenSteps launch dates.

3. Click whichever option is most appropriate to your situation, though the Mobile phone option is recommended and required if you do have a smartphone.

4. Enter your phone number.Verify that the phone number you entered is correct by checking the box, then click Continue.

5. Choose the type of phone you are enrolling from the list and click Continue

6. Make sure you have downloaded the Duo Mobile app; then click I have Duo Mobile installed

7. Follow the on-screen instructions to scan the barcode.

8. Click Continue.

9. Use the When I log in: drop-down menu to choose which authentication method you’d like to use automatically. Click Continue to Login.

10. You'll be taken to the main 2FA screen. This is the screen you'll see every time you need to authenticate. Click the box next to  Remember me for 30 days to save your authentication for that Internet browser, and that device, for 30 days. Then click Send Me a Push.

If you do not have access to the Duo Mobile app, you can select the Call Me or Enter a Passcode options. If you have a smartphone, please use the Send Me a Push option. 

11. You'll receive a push notification asking you to verify that you are the person currently trying to access your account. Open the notification and tap the green checkmark. 

If you receive a notification like this when you are not trying to log in to your account, it means that someone is trying to get into your account. Open the notification and tap the red X to deny the request, and make sure to change your BYU-Idaho password as soon as possible.

You're now set up with 2FA and logged in to your account. You'll only need to do this when logging in to your BYU-Idaho account from an off-campus network, and only every 30 days per device and browser.
